Tucked into a quiet corner of a street in Spryfield you will come upon St. Gabriel’s Convent distinguishable by the large white cross on the front lawn with the beautiful grotto dedicated to our Lady . This convent is owned by the Sisters of the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus an order with its beginnings in Nigeria.

There are approximately 50 communities scattered across Nigeria, two in the United States and one in Canada- which is situated here in the Archdiocese of Halifax.

In Nigeria, this congregation has lay Associates and the sisters wanted to begin to establish one in Canada. “Many are called, but few are chosen” And so, in June 2005, history was made when the first Canadian Associates came into existence.

In a beautiful ceremony on the feast of Corpus Christi, three Canadians surrounded by their families, friends and the sisters made their promises. More members have joined the Associates over the years.

Part of the associates’ commitment is to attend Mass at the convent, have adoration together with the sisters and have retreats for Lent and Advent. One of the associates said, “Praying in community has enriched our lives while the sisters are there to guide us in our spiritual growth.

As part of the associates’ life with the sisters, we are involved in organizing many other social and prayerful events.

As president of the group I invite you to join us for Saturday morning mass presided over by various priests of the archdiocese and stay afterwards to socialize in the convent over tea/coffee and treats provided each week by those who attend. This is followed by adoration. Should you wish to stay, the sisters are happy and most welcoming. Should you wish further information please contact:
